New Zealand has announced that working holiday visa holders from the United Kingdom and Canada can extend their stays beyond the regular one-year limit, thanks to a legal agreement known as the Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa.
Immigration New Zealand sets specific rules for each qualifying nationality, with extensions differing by country of citizenship.
New Zealand: Extension for UK and Canadian citizens
Canadians who are presently in New Zealand on a 12-month working vacation visa can request to extend their stay by up to 11 months, extending their total time in the country to just under two years.
UK nationals, on the other hand, enjoy significantly more flexibility. Those who entered New Zealand with a 12-month or longer United Kingdom Working Holiday Visa may request an extension to cover the remainder of the 36-month maximum length.
In effect, this implies that British nationals can stay in New Zealand for up to three years, as long as they meet the criteria of the succeeding visa.

The subsequent visa is not an independent permission, but rather a method for completing the remaining time allowed under each bilateral working holiday arrangement.
Applications for this extension must be made while the applicant is in New Zealand and before the current visa expires.
The plan follows the parameters agreed upon by New Zealand and each partner country; therefore, the maximum stay allowed to any individual is totally dependent on which country’s working holiday arrangement applies to them.
UK nationals benefit from one of the more generous agreements, with a 36-month cap, whilst Canadian nationals have a shorter combined window.
