Germany reportedly rejects Tinubu’s appointment of Femi Fani-Kayode as ambassador, cites reasons

The German government has reportedly rejected the nomination of former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate, citing concerns over his past conduct and public statements.

President Bola Tinubu had approved Fani-Kayode’s posting on March 6. However, according to an exclusive report by the People’s Gazette, the German authorities allegedly declined the nomination on March 13, 2026, reportedly over what they described as his “erratic behaviour” and history of controversial remarks.

The German government was said to have raised concerns about his past statements, particularly those considered ethnocentric, tribalistic, and religiously divisive, noting that such views could be destabilising.

Meanwhile, Gazette reports that sources within the administration suggest that he may be reassigned to another diplomatic posting, with South Africa being considered as a possible destination.

Fani-Kayode has long been a controversial figure in Nigerian politics, known for his outspoken views and past public confrontations. In 2020, he drew criticism after verbally attacking a journalist during a press conference in Calabar, before later issuing an apology.

He has also faced scrutiny over personal matters, including a widely reported custody dispute with his estranged wife.
