A former Minister of Aviation and newly appointed ambassador, Femi Fani-Kayode, has stirred reactions online following strong remarks about Nigeria’s opposition parties during a televised interview.
Speaking on Television programme, Fani-Kayode dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a gathering of desperate politicians rather than a credible political party.
In the viral clip, he said, “Well I don’t see the ADC as a political party, I see them as an association of people that are desperate for power. Individuals that are discredited, individuals that have no hope in hell of taking this country forward.”
He went further to criticise Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi, stating, “Particularly, I look at someone like Peter Obi, God forbid, to be president of this country, and I won’t go into why I’m saying that, but God forbid.”
Mixed Views on Atiku, Support for Tinubu
While expressing reservations about some opposition figures, Fani-Kayode acknowledged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saying, “I have respect for the former vice president, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku. He was our vice president. But I also believe that it’s time for him to simply say, “Okay, look, let others continue the work.””
He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the current administration has implemented key reforms.
“The president has done a good job. Three reforms he has put in place. I believe it’s important that he’s allowed to do a second term today,” he added.
“Opposition Has Collapsed”
Fani-Kayode argued that Nigeria’s opposition parties have lost direction and effectiveness, blaming internal conflicts for their struggles.
“But ADC as a party is part of the problem, and I’ll tell you why. Okay? The opposition has collapsed in Nigeria. The opposition has collapsed,” he said.
“There is no opposition because they don’t even know how to be an opposition. When we were in power, when we were in PDP, APC at the time when it was formed, we had a strong opposition.”
Reflecting on past political dynamics, he added, “In the end, they defeated us in 2015. Can you compare the APC that was in opposition to the jokers that we have today? They call themselves opposition.”
Blames Opposition for APC Defections
The former minister also addressed the wave of defections to the ruling party, insisting that the responsibility lies with opposition parties rather than the government.
“So when you’re talking, people complain by the fact that everybody is joining the APC. It’s not the president’s fault. It’s not our fault. It’s the fault of the opposition.”
He concluded with a sharp critique of opposition leaders’ conduct, saying, “Because all they do is sit in a bedroom, quibbling, fighting one another.
“And instead of doing the job they’re meant to do, which is to keep the government on its toes, they can’t keep the government on its toes because they themselves are not even standing.
“They’re snoring in bed, bickering, quibbling and fighting one another.”
