Governor Alex Otti has commissioned several infrastructure projects and announced new initiatives at Abia State University, as part of efforts to reposition the institution for growth and innovation.
During a visit to the university in Uturu, the governor inaugurated a refurbished 5MVA power station, upgraded from 2.5MVA, aimed at providing stable electricity to the campus and surrounding communities. He also delivered three retrofitted hostels to improve student accommodation.
In addition, Otti flagged off the construction of new facilities, including 5,000-bed hostels for both male and female students, new buildings for the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Law, as well as a 1.8-kilometre internal road project.
At the combined convocation ceremony, the governor announced employment opportunities for first-class graduates, offering automatic lecturing positions as Graduate Assistants after the completion of their NYSC. He also unveiled postgraduate scholarship opportunities up to PhD level for top-performing graduates in public universities across Nigeria.
To support entrepreneurship, Otti disclosed a ₦200 million business grant targeted at 100 graduates with innovative ideas in sectors such as agriculture, ICT, and clean energy.
The event also featured the recognition of outstanding individuals, including the institution’s best graduating student and notable honourees such as Ooni of Ife, Allen Onyema, and Stella Okoli.
