An influencer identified as Flora the Digital Banker has gone viral after sharing alleged plans to replace the Nigerian Naira with a single Eco currency across West Africa starting 2027.
Eco Currency: A Single Currency for 12 West African Nations
According to Flora, the Eco currency will be a shared currency among 12 West African countries that are member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“Are you aware that from 2027, there is not going to be a currency called Naira? It is going to be replaced by a currency called the Eco. The Eco-currency is a combination of currencies from 12 African countries… This Eco-currency is to mirror the type that is obtained in the European Union. All the countries in the EU are using the same currency. So this is just a replica of that model.”
The 12 countries expected to adopt the Eco currency include Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Togo, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Cabo Verde.
The currency reportedly intended to promote price stability and facilitate inter-border transactions across the region.
Concerns Over Management and External Influence
Flora highlighted concerns regarding who would manage the new currency and the possibility of outside powers exerting control.
“There are questions of who is going to print the currency? Who is going to manage the currency? Serious concerns of outside powers controlling these currencies. Nigeria is pushing to ensure that France does not have control over this currency, because some of these African countries are using currencies tied to France.”
Nigerians Urged to Engage Early
She also urged citizens to raise questions or concerns now, rather than waiting until the policy is implemented.
“If you have concerns, if you have questions, if you have any reservation about this policy, this is the time to raise your concerns. Don’t wait for 11:45 when the policy is already implemented before you now start to say you want to protest. This is the time for us to come together, read this report, let’s raise the concerns right now. 11:45 is not the best time to protest. That is five minutes to go. It may be already too late.”
Spreading Awareness
Flora concluded by calling for widespread awareness of the upcoming change:
“So please share this video, tell everybody around you that from 2027 we are going to have a single currency alongside 11 other African countries.”
It is worth noting that Gistreel has not independently confirmed these reports, and the information is based solely on the influencer’s statements.
